Here are some things you might not know about Homeowners Associations.

I’m shocked, dismayed, and a little upset with myself that I haven’t talked about HOAs in detail. They’re huge here in South Carolina, so I’m going to talk a little bit about them today.

Most of the homes built in the last 25 to 30 years are in a Homeowners Association. The No. 1 thing to know is that you have to do your research and understand the rules. It can be time-consuming and tedious, but it’s so important to do.

“HOAs are synonymous with homeownership in South Carolina.”

We run into so many different types of rules and regulations in these HOAs. Things like fence restrictions, house colors, parking, and pet restrictions are things that you need to be aware of before you decide to purchase a home. We’ve also run into home improvement restrictions, color shingle requirements, and extremely strict architectural review boards that won’t let you change a thing.

This is another huge reason why you need to have a Realtor with experience buying and selling these homes. I know the HOA rules around here and I’d be happy to guide you through the process if you or anyone you know is in the market to buy a home in the next year.
